If you have an understanding how quality gasket materials are made you have a better chance of buying a quality product. Quality does not happen by accident. Today if you search for non-asbestos sheet (gasket material) on the internet you will likely (I just did this and was shocked) get a list of Chinese and Indian companies soliciting their gasket materials. I’m sure some have substantial quality control programs. I’m also sure some don’t.
The second issue is unless you visit the facilities you really cannot know who truly is a manufacturer and who is a re-seller. Our responsibility to our customers is know what gasket materials we are supplying, what materials go into them, and what conditions they are made in. Does that company also manufacture Asbestos sheet under the same roof ? Is the product branded (are they proud of the gasket material they make?) And how do they package and ship the product to get it safely to the customer without damage.
Due to environmental and cost issues, companies like Garlock and Thermoseal have moved the common grades of the gasket material production off shore. Solvents are used to produce gasket sheet and are expensive to reclaim and contain. Lamons set up gasket manufacturing in India. Durlon continues to produce their sheet gasketing in Canada. So, buying American is not always possible in compressed non-asbestos sheet gasket material, but buying a quality product is.
We not only sell sheet gasketing but we do our homework to make sure your getting the best gasket material for your money. There are very well established names like Garlock, Durlon, Teadit, Lamons, FMI, Gambit, and Donit in the world of non-asbestos sheet. Many of the other names you might think of are likely a reseller of the above quality brands (if it’s a branded product).
In the case of unbranded gasket materials it’s a hit and miss situation and most likely Chinese. We know of one national reseller of non-asbestos sheet that took a chance on a truck load of un-branded gasket sheet material. It was a disaster! The material had very little tensile strength which meant you could not move the material without ripping the sheets. Low tensile is a sure sign of poor quality fibers and excess filler. Filler can mean clay. By inspecting and monitoring our suppliers our objective is to protect the safety of the Industrial worker. When I first worked in this industry, I met a seasoned steam room worker that kept an old broom handle to inspect his super heated steam flanges. He explained that if the gasket was leaking the invisable jet stream steam leak could literally cut a man in half! That was early in my career but it drove home the point that a quality gasket material is not just a seal, it’s a safety device.
Below is a tour of the production area of Gambit in Europe. They use quality Dupont Aramid fibers, the shop is clean, the equipment is modern and they clearly take pride in the gasket material they produce.
