PTFE Joint sealant is actually Expanded PTFE (EPTFE). Normal PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), is a registered trademark of the DuPont company for its brand of polytetrafluoroethylene Teflon. PTFE is a resin and considered a plastic, and is hard like a plastic unless it has been expanded. Once expanded it has the density of a dense marshmallow. Sealant Mechanism
Using a flexible rubber or gasket soft material between two hard materials has been proven to be highly reliable. The limitations of many elastomers stop at 250 degrees F. Chemically, rubber elastomers have limitations generally close to 7 on the PH scale. Various grades of FKM for example will handle a much wider range of chemicals, but will not reach the 0-14 ph scale of EPTFE (except molten alkali metals and elemental fluorine). EPTFE is highly recommended in applications up to 500F with excursions up to 600 F, far exceeding the limitations of rubber.
