Flexible Graphite Sheet

Flexible gaphite comes in many various grades. To prevent pitting on your flanges after using flexible graphite it is important use a high quality material that is low in sulfur content.

There are several methods to create flexible graphite. The inexpensive way to produce it is to use inexpensive graphite (which contains contaminants) and combine it with sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid is inexpensive and does expand the graphite into flexible graphite worms that gasket material is made from however, it leaves a high sulfur content in the finished flexible grpahite gasket material. Sulfur causes corrosion.

The better but more expensive method is to use a high quality of graphite and then expose it to nucleic acid. Nucleic costs more but doe not leave a residue that will cause the deterioration of the flange sealing surface. It's more true in flexible graphite gasket material than in most things that, "the sweetness of a low price is soon forgotten" when you have to repair of replace your flanges. A quality flexible graphite will always be less expensive in the long run.
